In their own words.

What the Center means to some of the people who call it their community.

“

As a refugee, I usually don’t go out because of my legal status and because of the fear of getting harassed. I spend the majority of my time at home, which leaves me feeling depressed. The Center became my only haven to spend time outside while feeling safe, and being myself without feeling judged. I know I’m not alone in feeling this way. Helem isn’t just a place to meet, it helps the queer community through its many initiatives, providing support and services that are difficult to find elsewhere.

What kept me coming back was an instant feeling of being surrounded and not feeling alone in my queer experience. In a country where safe spaces for us are limited, The Center has always made us feel welcomed and visibly seen rather than pushed to the margins.

Helem’s Center has become a second home to me. The people there have helped me through difficult moments, and made me feel like I truly belong. Being part of it made me more open and accepting of myself and others. I don’t think I would have had the same confidence to face people and be myself without them. I’m deeply grateful to everyone I met at Helem, from the bottom of my heart.
